Who Were Aesir Gods in Norse Mythology?

For those who just start reading Norse mythology, they might find it hard to understand what some nouns in the myth could possibly mean. In this blog post, we are to explain briefly about the Aesir god tribe in Norse mythology. The upcoming blog post will be about Vanir god tribe as well.

So in Norse mythology, there were two god tribes (two groups of gods). They lived in different parts away from each other. Each tribe presented for a certain kind of power. But seemingly, Norse mythology revolves around Aesir god tribe more.

The two god tribes were the Aesir and the Vanir. The two tribes once waged war against each other, being the famous story of God of War in Norse mythology.

WHO WERE THE AESIR?

Aesir ("ICE-ir") was the major god tribe in Norse mythology. The Aesir gods were those who would use weapon in battle rather than magic or natural power which was commonly used in the Vanir tribe.

Aesir gods lived in Asgard somewhere on the top branches of Yggdrasil Tree of Life. The Aesir gods were considered to be force that held the cosmos together from the beginning.

Odin the Allfather and Thor Norse god of thunder and storm in Norse mythology came from the Aesir god tribe

Odin the Allfather and Thor God of Thunder and Storm

In Norse mythology, the Aesir gods included gods like

  • Odin the Allfather: Chief God of War, Death, Wisdom, Poem, and Sky
  • Thor: God of Thunder and Storm, son of Odin.
  • Baldur: God of Fairness, prince of Asgard, son of Odin
  • Tyr: God of Honor and Justice
  • Heimdall: Guardsman of Asgard, son of Odin
  • Bragi: God of Music and Poem, son of Odin
  • Frigg: Goddess of Love, marriage, motherhood, Wife of Odin, mother of Baldur.

Odin and his brothers (Vili and Ve) were those who created the world from scratch. They killed the ancient giant to fashion the world with his corpse. When Odin and his brothers were walking on the shore, they saw two tree trunks so they decided to create a new kind of creatures that resembled their appearance. And there came the humanity.

According to many historians, two out of three gods that the Vikings commonly worshipped came from the Aesir tribe. They were Odin the Allfather and Thor God of Thunder and Storm.
